An interesting read, I did exactly the same March ‘23, I didn’t manage to ski this year, fingers crossed for next season, we usually manage 4 weeks a year, so really missed it this winter. The only pain I’m getting now is through the metalwork, I’m hoping that will get more manageable with time as I’m a bit reluctant to have another op.

@rungsp, Guess it depends how grateful you are for all the surgeons work? Broke my leg in AUstria 26/27 years ago. 8 day stay in an Austrian hospital. I'm sure they did a better job than a UK surgeon would have done. STill have 2 screws in the knee, and yes it gives me jip, but I put up with it. Smashed several ribs, triple spiral fracture of the humorous. punctured lungs, internal bleed in chest, died on the operating table apparently, (was told they soon got me back). All in 2010. Was back up on skis in 5 months. Grateful for every minute I have. Also Austria BTW. Maybe the issue is with the UK doctors you saw?

Sorry but I have absolutely no idea why you think I was note grateful or unhappy with a surgeons work?
Genuinely bemused...I have had not complaints at all, far from it.

@Old Man Of Lech, read the thread and pay attention to the dates of posts. The operation which failed was to remove the pins over a decade ago.

To be clear:
Broke leg skiing (don't do that)
Operation 1: Repair and pin leg. Success
Operation 2: Attempt to remove pin, not successful
15 years later
Operation 3: Attempt to remove pin, successful.
My thread was started after Op 2.
The Operation failed...now that is just a statement of fact, it's not a criticism of the care, it's just a fact that at that time the pin didn't budge.
Similarly it's not a criticism of you to say you clearly have a problem with being judgemental after jumping to conclusions...it's just a fact

Anyone who says that they are sure their Austrian surgeon "did a better job than a UK surgeon would have done" is hardly in a position to chastise anyone else for their judgements....

@rungsp, glad this time round worked!
I had pins and plates in my arm and felt ongoing pain with the hardwear in, the op to remove them was much much worse than I was expecting. I think there is a lot of trauma in bruting out the screws and pushing around muscle etc to get the plates out. Bad times but full recovery for me since with zero pain any more.

How extraordinary, I had no idea there could be such complications.
I had the same operation, done at 10.30 at night on the day of the accident (in Austria they clearly believe in same day treatment!).
I have had no pain since the first few days and was happily skiing the next season as though it hadn't happened.
Mind you, I haven't tried to have it taken out and I can easily see why this might be a problem. I can see it might be an even bigger problem if I broke my leg again and bent the titanium but I am just trusting to the fact it took me till I was 66 to break a bone for the first time, after about 100 weeks of skiing, so perhaps my next break will be when I'm about 100 (assuming I'm still skiing) And with a bit of luck it might be the other leg..
@Hells Bells, I don't understand how the metal-work gave way on her. The bone should have returned to its normal strength and the metal is mostly just to hold the ends together while they fuse.

Thanks @rungsp, I'm not sure I've been on here since the Spring Off Piste Bash. Just returned from 10 days in North Greece which was extremely nice but not skiing (a bit of snow in the distance - Olympus etc)

I'm sat here with my leg still swollen after doing what sounds like a similar thing at the BB in Feb. Had appointment on Tues and they said I could start loading it to 50% but it still wasn't fully calcified and to come back in 4 weeks. (Probably not helped by a fairly bad slip on it 4 weeks in). The surgeon said they sometimes 're-operate' if it's not fusing and they'd have put a larger plate and more screws in than the Italians did. I've got one leg like a toothpic and the other bulging from all the one leg squats I've been having to do.
Just paid the deposit for a trip next easter. Gunning for the snowheads one in Dec if I can walk by then...
Basically, just seconding the main thrust that breaking your leg is best avoided.

I feel the pain of the OP here. I broke my tibia and Fibula in early December, clean snap and also 2x bones in my foot. The pain was horrendous and the first time Ive ever broken a bone in my body. I had plates/bolts /screws which will be there for life. I still get swollen ankles each day and will give skiing a try next winter. Nervous to say the least!
